1000Mbps DEMO – 21st April 2018

A live demonstration of the B4RN 1000 Mbps supply to Chipping Village Hall will take place between 2:00 and 4:00pm at Chipping Village Hall (drop in at any time).

There will be an opportunity to see how fast an HD film can be downloaded from Netflix (or elsewhere); the impact (none) of lots of TVs pulling a service at the same time; a number of computers showing the actual speed being obtained with a live connection and the amazing response time for those who play interactive games across the internet; .

We will also have a number of people available to answer your questions, including:

  • Champions for each route around the village, who can tell you what stage we are at (and how soon we will get to you), how you can register to be connected and ways in which you can help to speed up the whole process.
  • Members of the CHAIN steering committee who can advise on how to invest in B4RN and the benefits of doing so.
  • Techies who can advise of how to get the best out of a B4RN supply.
  • A mock up of a House Kit to show what will need to be installed if you decide to subscribe.

Fibre is on its way

B4RN have begun the process of blowing optical fibre from the cabinet in Bleasdale through to the cabinet at Chipping Village Hall.  This means that the first homes will begin to be connected in mid-February 2018.

The homes that will be connected are either on Route 1 (from Bleasdale to Chipping) or near to the cabinet at the village hall.  There are still some wayleaves (permission from landowners) to obtain to allow the conduit to cross individual fields and gardens, but we should soon be developing the network in the centre of the village.

If you would like to ensure that you are on the list for a connection please email either chainmail@chippingchain.org or connections@b4rn.org.uk.  The cost for a connection is £150 (or shareholders who own at least £1,500 in shares can get this for nothing).  The connection provides the fibre connection and the hardware (modem) in your house.  It then costs £30 a month (£25 + VAT) for the service.  It is possible to arrange the connection without taking the service initially (you may be in a contract for the next few months for example).

In any event, if you want to obtain a connection, please do get in touch and we will let you know the likely timing for your property.

Route Planning Started

B4RN have already created a map showing the core routes from Bleasdale, around Chipping and linking up with the Grimsargh network. The CHAIN Steering Committee have been reviewing these routes and have begun talking to landowners.  Generally there has been a very positive response, but as we learn more details about the individual areas of land, we may find that we need to adjust some routes accordingly.

The Trustees at Chipping Village Hall have agreed that we can place a cabinet outside the hall, so soon we will be seeking volunteers to help create the concrete base for this.  We will also need to begin receiving some money, either through loans or the purchase of shares to fund this.

We are planning another open meeting sometime in March to provide an update of where things stand, so please watch out for notices regarding that.
